This one came on my radar again thanks to TikTok. Definitely not what I expected but pleasantly surprised...I think?
Synopsis: Follows a very wealthy family over the course of each summer holiday when they all get together on their private island. However, main character Cadence has some lost memories after an accident two summers ago that no one wants to tell her about. Alongside that, the rest of the family is constantly at ends fighting over who gets the inheritance and the "liars" (Cadence and her 3 cousins) attempt to avoid the drama while making trouble and avoiding responsibilities.
Plot: The plot itself? No. The twist? Absolutely. It was really the only thing keeping me going. I just wanted some answers and the ending did not disappoint. However, everything else was not the best and the ending really did save this from being 2 stars. The entire plot only revolves around the other characters lying to Cadence and not telling her what happened. Because that is the only plot, it makes 3/4s of the book quite boring. The rest of the time is the family arguing over money and Cadence being in pain, being confused and then complaining about it...and thats mostly it.
Characters: These characters are the epitome of "rich people problems." Cadence gets to spend every summer at a private island (except for the summer she traveled around Europe) yet she spends every second of the book complaining about it. The rest of the family are the same, arguing over who gets the tablecloths and manipulating their children to do their bidding. I understand the point of this bickering when it comes to the overall story but it was hard to read at times. Despite being insufferable, it made these characters more believable. For hearing very little about some of them, they still seemed fully fleshed out. Even though this book follows a family and a group of friends, I would still argue that no one in this book actually likes each other.
Bland and hard to read at times. But DAMN that ending, made it worth it.
3.5/5 stars.
