Ugly Love

Okay, TikTok made me read it. My very first Colleen Hoover book...and I cannot say we started out strong. (Thankfully the ones I've read since are much better). Please don't tear me apart CoHo lovers.

Synopsis: Tate Collins, after moving in with her brother has a rocky meeting with one of his friends Miles Archer. Well aware it isn't love at first sight, Tate still cannot deny the mutual attraction between them, thus begins a "friends" with benefits arrangement. Only Miles has two rules: Don't ask about the past and don't expect a future--rules Tate isn't sure she can keep to.

Plot: Going in, the beginning didn't excite me much at all. We've all read the friends with benefits, enemies to lovers situation so there isn't much new here. The romance felt very forced as well and super insta-lovey. Tate doesn't even know Miles but insists on being in love with him. I always find books that focus a lot on the physical relationship to really be lacking in the emotional aspects and this one definitely is. There was no smooth transition from sex to love, no meaningful conversations, nothing, so it felt very inauthentic. All they had was strictly physical. Miles's backstory was really great however and I was actually a lot more interested in that than the main plot. However, some of the flashback scenes made me uncomfortable (step-sibling love) and didn't make me feel sorry for Miles as I know it was intended. A dark, sad and heavy story, but I did end up enjoying the ending after all.

Characters: I'm sorry, I honestly didn't like either main character. Miles isn't terrible but Tate is the worst. She goes into this arrangement well aware of what Miles wants and yet she still gets pissed for his lack of interest in her. She also has a HUGE lack of self-respect and it made it really hard to read anything coming from her. CoHo so far to me can't write a healthy relationship either as this seemed very toxic, which I don't enjoy and don't root for. I cannot find the connection and reading about people choosing sex over proper communication isn't my fav.

Please go to therapy Miles. Thank you.

Not the worst but definitely prefer her other books I've read more over this.

2.5/5 stars.
