Went into this knowing nothing after hearing some really great things...and I have to say I'm a little disappointed.
Synopsis: Alizeh is a nobody, a poor servant to be overlooked and ordered around. But in actuality, she is the lost long heir to an ancient all-powerful jinn kingdom with a prophecy told that says she is to kill the King of the kingdom she's hiding in. That is until, despite her hiding, she meets Kamran, the crown prince and cannot help the attraction regardless of the danger the two together bring.
Plot: I loved the Persian mythology elements of this, as it's something very different than the usual fantasy tropes. However, the actual storytelling here was really lacking and the pacing was tedious and slow. For most of the story, I was unsure of what the actual plot was since everything felt disjointed and all over the place. There are all the good makings of a great story (secret princess, magic, A DRAGON) but it failed when it came to delivery and because of that, was doing way too much. Mafi has the most beautiful detailed descriptions but without the backbone of a well-thought-out plot, it was too unorganized, out of place and just lacking tension.
Characters: Oh wow, was the prince the worst. I cannot understand how we are supposed to be rooting for such an arrogant narcissist. There was not one point in this story did he redeem himself to me either. Alizeh is such an interesting character with a lot of intrigue and she 100% saved this book for me, I don't think I would have finished it without her. There were some good plot twists when it came to her backstory but there was too much focus on the insta-love romance rather than her actual super interesting traits that defined this book.
Not super excited to pick up the sequel when it does come out, but I'll probably still end up reading it.
2/5 stars.
