They Both Die at the End

Other than the fact that they both die at the end, I wasn't sure what to expect. And to be honest, even though it says that...I was still unsure, which kept me more interested throughout.

Synopsis: Two boys, Mateo and Rufus both get a phone call from Death-Cast. A service that calls you notifying you, without details, that today is the day you will die. Not wanting to spend their last day alone, both boys use the Last Friend app to find a dying buddy together, in order to have one last great adventure and live a great End Day.

Plot: I really love this premise of this because so many people ask "would you want to know the day you die," and in this alternate universe you do. I was worried however, this was going to be cliche and preachy because of this plot, but for the most part, it wasn't and instead really made you think. There was also an added suspense aspect to it because although you are told they are going to die, you don' know when or how, so at any moment something could happen. My biggest issue is the added romance. I love me a love story but it felt so out of place here and forced. I'm becoming really tired of YA novels having to include a romance in every plot. A great last friendship would have been much better.

Characters: Told in multiple POVs which was really interesting, especially when you got to hear from the friends that were losing them. I didn't like the inclusions of random side characters though, instead of adding to the story, these additions just distracted from it and felt unorganized. Mateo and Rufus were fantastic main characters with great representation too. They are both very different personalities and by the end, you both really learn to love them and their quirks. However, if I see the word "mad" used as an adjective one more time I will lose it.

4/5 stars.
