I truly was not expecting to love this as much as I did, but it was so good! Another great book for this year!
Synopsis: The Farrow family has been cursed for generations. After a certain age, the hallucinations start, featuring a red door, other people, and things that aren't there. June Farrow has started having these visions, knowing that it will soon drive her to madness and death, as it did for other Farrow women. A mysterious letter is left to June after her grandmother's death sending her on a journey and through the red door. What she finds beyond is not what she expected...and it may change the future and the past for all Farrow women.
Plot: The most memorable part of this is the writing itself. I was not expecting to fall in love with it like I did. The way she wove the narrative was so beautiful and poetic at times while also giving the most impeccable vibes. It was romantic, and mysterious, and creepy, and dreamy all at the same time. I wanted to dive into this setting and walk amongst the farm fields with June. I have to say that I did find elements of the plot a little confusing. Time travel is always super complicated, and I think it's actually impossible to do 100% without any plot holes and making complete sense. Because of that, I cannot give this a true 5 stars. But only because of that. I was not expecting the plot to take the turns that it did and it left me super invested and curious the whole time. I picked this up and did not put it down until it was finished. A very digestible read that also sucks you in from page one. This book is also such a genre-bender. It has romantic elements and literary fiction elements, but also mystery and fantasy. It truly has it all and I think a lot of people would really enjoy this since it has something for everyone.
Characters: June as a character was good do not get me wrong, but I definitely think the characters were not as important in this one. It was more about the vibes and the plot itself. Regardless, June had a lot to give. I appreciate her drive to solve this mystery and not give in to what other people are telling her. She is a fighter and refuses to give up or let the past drive her future. She takes things into her own hands, which is super refreshing to read.
Overall, I think I might need to read everything else Adrienne Young has read because her writing is phenomenal.
4.5/5.
