Loved this a lot more than I initially thought I would. My favorite O'Leary book so far.
Synopsis: Londoner Leena gets sent on sabbatical at work after blowing a presentation and needs a scenery change to get her mind off things. She heads to rural Yorkshire to spend time with her grandmother. Meanwhile, grandmother Eileen is looking for love and can't seem to find it in her small town. Feeling stuck or bored in their lives, 20-something Leena and her 79-year-old Eileen decide to switch places.
Plot: This isn't like Freaky Friday I promise. It is a lot more wholesome but still just as funny, without the body switch. Effortless to read and a quick one to get through. Most of the story was very sweet and uplifting but there were also emotional moments and topics of abuse and grief that made their situations and lives more relatable and real. There is just something about a book set in London that always gets me. Not too too much of a plot, definitely more of a character-driven storyline but I didn't mind that when the characters were so great.
Characters: To be honest, I wasn't really sure how much I would care about these characters, specifically Eileen because of her age but I ADORED HER. We definitely need more stories about older characters. She was easily my favorite but they were both so loveable. There were a lot of side characters as well but despite the volume, they were fully fleshed out and were great additions to the storyline and which I also loved a lot.
So charming and warm n' fuzzy.
4/5 stars.
TW: death in family (child), cancer, abusive relationship.
