I knew 10% into this book that it would break my heart.
Synopsis: Storyline follows Patroclus, an awkward young exiled prince and Achilles, the boy destined for greatness. They meet in childhood under interesting circumstances and become quick but unlikely friends. From boyhood to adult life and training to war, Patroclus and Achilles are inseparable, facing fate, destiny, and sacrifice.
Plot: All I had knowledge-wise for mythology was what Percy Jackson gave me, so going into this I knew I was going to be a little confused. Even without understanding everything and not knowing who all the characters were, it was so immersive and beautifully told that it didn't matter. It's also interesting going into a book when you already know the outcome, and I think that makes it all the more special. This is a love story, in its truest form. It was so personal and intimate that I felt I was intruding into their lives. Miller writes with such beautiful quotes and words that left me rereading sections and pausing in awe. Difficult to read because you know where it's going, but the path to get there is incredible and well worth the pain. There is a reason this is an award-winning book,
Characters: Unpopular opinion here...but Achilles kinda sucks. He's arrogant, entitled, and rude. HOWEVER, Achilles when he's with Patroclus? Everything. Patroclus is such a kind soul and deserved so much and the way you can see the characters shift when they're together is another reason their love felt so real. I really feel as though I know these characters so incredibly well. Since we follow them from childhood to adulthood and beyond, we get to really see the coming of age and a love story between two people developing and ending.
The rating is so high simply because of the gorgeous writing.
4/5 stars.
