The Selection by Kiera Cass is a warm hug of a book. This is a re-read for me, but it has been a good 6 years since the first time I delved into this series. Despite no longer being a teen, this book is still just as incredible, dreamy, romantic and fun as I remember it being. I love, love, love this story.
Synopsis: This series follows a future United States that has separated people into castes 1-8, 1 being royalty and 8 being the equivalent to homeless. America Singer is a 5, working hard to support her family. In order to help them and appease her secret 6 boyfriend, she enters the Selection, a competition like the Bachelor, where the prince attempts to find a bride from a selection of girls across the country. America is chosen as one of the competing 35 girls and we follow her as she struggles to decide if she is in the competition only to support her family or if she is developing feelings for Prince Maxton, who is not what she expected.
Plot: Cass does such a great job of dropping you in this world and making you fall in love with America and Prince Maxton. This book is highly predictable, but at the same time, I love that about it. I know exactly how it is going to end and I know that everything will be fine and end how I want it to. There is no problem that isn't resolved quickly. I can see that being an issue for some, but for me this makes it a very comfortable read.
Characters: America is lovely and open with her feelings, which is refreshing since in a lot of slow-burn romances the lovers keep their feelings hidden. Prince Maxton is the sweetest and is a great hero for our heroine to fall for, a Prince with apparently zero flaws, what more can you ask for? I really struggle to find bad things to say about this series; it is just a really nice happy romantic read and a classic in the young-adult romance category for a good reason. I will definitely be re-reading the next few books and will enjoy them all.
5/5 stars, easily.
