FINALLY! I had waited forever and ever to get my hands on this book. And I have to say, it was well worth the wait and well deserving of the praise it has received.
Synopsis: In a moment of desperation to avoid a marriage and a future Addie doesn't want, she makes a deal with the devil to be free. Of course those deals are never what they seem, so Addie is able to live forever, but she cannot leave a mark. No possessions, no writing or art and no one is able to remember her. 300 years later, strolling into a bookstore, someone does.
Plot: Although the "devil twisting the words of a deal" plot has been done before, it has never been done like this. There are so many interesting nuances and hidden easter eggs throughout this whole book that make it so enjoyable to read. Readers go back and forth between present day and traveling through the centuries with Addie and her beautiful and heartbreaking past. The writing was my absolute favorite part, it was GORGEOUS. I have never read something so beautiful. It overall can be tedious at times, but the longer read is well worth it for the descriptions that make you want to re-read them over and over. The storyline can also seem a little slow at times, but there was never a moment where I wanted to put the book down. The twists were unexpected and the overall narrative was well thought-out and deep. I was making predictions the entire way through and getting super involved and interested in the plot and at how the book was going to play out.
Characters: Addie. I have never become so attached to a character before. But after feeling like i've lived centuries with her and read her stories of heartbreak and survival, I rooted for her until the very end. The book is on the longer side, so you really get to spend the time with her learning about her life and really understanding her. Although the story is about Addie, each character that is mentioned and added has a purpose. Whether they were little side characters from her previous stories of life or current ones, each were important. The addition of Henry, as well as having the devil, Luc, have more of an involved role in the plot was also really fascinating and they both made the story more involved and gave me complicated feelings.
Be prepared for smiles AND tears, one of my favorite books of the year. A must read for the storyline as well as the gorgeous writing.
5/5 stars.
