My heart is so full after reading this novel. It was everything I could have hoped for, which was a lot considering the high praise I had heard before going into it. I knew 20 pages in that this was a 5 star read.
Synopsis: This book follows Linus Baker, a 30-something lonely man who works for the government monitoring magical children. He is sent on a job to the house in the cerulean sea, and finds love and family in an unexpected place.
Plot: This plot is super unique. I feel as though this might be a fairytale that will be retold in the future by other authors. The storyline had me entertained throughout the whole, rooting for the characters, crying and actually laughing out loud (which never happens). As warm and fluffy as this novel was, there were also great teaching moments throughout. Topics of acceptance, abuse, past trauma, prejudice and broken families are all covered and treated delicately raising questions and making me think. There were so many great quotes from Klune and the way he wrote and treated these topics was fantastic. This book was so much more than just a great story.
Characters: The characters are 100% what makes this book so special. Although the plot is intriguing, this is definitely more of a character study. Linus is so charming and I just want to give him a hug. I loved being inside his head and seeing the world though his lens as his thoughts and views shifted. His inner monologue is simply hilarious. And the children. THE CHILDREN. I cannot express how full they made my heart. Every scene with them in it was a joy to read. Such pure characters that you cannot help but fall in love with from the very start. I never thought I would cry over a button, but alas here I am.
Please read this book, easily the best book I've read so far this year. It is every bit as wonderful as everyone says it is. Although this is a standalone novel, I am really hoping Klune will continue this story and give me another reason to dive back into this lovely, heart warming world.
5/5 stars.
