The Hating Game

I feel like this is quite possibly one of the OG enemies to lovers. And because of that, it is done SO well.

Synopsis: Lucy Hutton takes pride in the fact that everyone at her office likes her, everyone except her officemate Joshua Templeman. That's okay though because the hatred is mutual. Lucy thinks about her hatred of him all day, every day, while they continually compete in all the games of one-upping each other. Especially when that new game is a new promotion that just opened up. But Lucy's obsession with hating Joshua somehow turns into steamy dreams about him and an unexpected elevator kiss. So where does the line between hate and love begin and end?

Plot: Although I have read the enemies to lovers plot a dozen times over, I still really loved this. The tension! The slow burn! I almost wish there was even more of a slow burn because at times the jump to an actual relationship felt a little abrupt for me. That being said, there were so many sweet scenes between the two of them and I ended up really loving and rooting for their relationship. My biggest praise is that the third-act conflict wasn't the huge and terrible fight it usually is, AND it got solved very quickly. I am so bored with the typical romance novel structure and I'm so happy this strayed away a bit.

Characters: I'm sorry but I can only picture Lucy Hale as Lucy now and I have to see the new movie adaptation. She is perfect for that role. Lucy is definitely the typical fun and quirky heroine but I can't help it, I still loved her. Joshua too was a ridiculous sweet hero, so no complaints here.

Good, would read again, but nothing too crazy.

3.5 stars.
