Picked this up on a whim and ended up really enjoying it!! My first from Foley and I have to say I will be taking a peek at her other titles.
Synopsis: Told from five different points of view at the celebrity wedding of the year. The bride: Magazine editor that picked a remote island with a creepy past to get married. The groom: A rising star with irresistible charm and a secret. The plus one: Inserted into an unknown group with a husband resolved to impress his former classmates. The wedding planner: Determined to make this wedding a hit to save the island, at all costs. The best man: Who may not know the groom as well as he thinks he did. The maid of honor: Struggling to stay afloat with a dark past catching up to her.
And then...a body.
Plot: I don't always pick up a thriller, but I never seem to have a bad time when I do. Nothing about this really made me super scared or gave off especially creepy vibes but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I enjoyed learning the backstories of each of the characters and each chapter left off with such a good cliffhanger which made this impossible to put down. I was absolutely hooked from the beginning and kept guessing the entire time at the final outcome–which I didn't guess correctly and did NOT see coming. A lot of people have had issues with the more "topical" nature of this thriller or the writing style itself, but I definitely didn't mind and enjoyed the way Foley laid out her narrative. I think some things could have been focused on a bit more, specifically the setting but other than that...pretty much nailed it.
Characters: What an interesting cast. Wow! I feel like I learned so much about this dynamic group but also nothing at the same time–in a good and mysterious way though. With the combination of a secluded, no-escape setting, and the tumultuous cast of characters, I knew it was going to make interesting twists...and I was right. I can confidently say that none of the main characters were any of my top favorites but that made it an even more interesting read because you aren't really rooting for someone in particular and just letting the story take you where it does.
Was a Goodreads Choice winner in 2020 for a reason. I think Paris Apartment will be next.
4/5 stars.
TW: abortion, self-harm, mention of suicide, abusive relationships mentioned, cheating, and suicidal intention.
