As a reader, I will read anything that has to do with books. So when this was making its rounds, it caught my attention.
Synopsis: Huge baseball star Gavin and his wife Thea have been having issues. Once Gavin realizes his wife has been faking it in bed, fights ensue and the strain on their marriage becomes too much: Thea asks for divorce. To help with his failing relationship, Gavin joins a secret romance book club. This is a group of societies top men who get together and read romance novels in order to take the wisdom from the literature and apply it to their real life relationships. Gavin joins in hopes of saving his marriage and getting his wife to fall in love with him all over again.
Plot: Like I said, the plot is really what drew me in. The idea of A-list men reading and drawing insight from steamy romance novels was something I just had to read and it didn't really disappoint. I feel as though married couples are usually overlooked in the saturated romance department, so getting a different perspective in a second-chance romance was nice. I think the overall narrative, fights and all, was also very realistic. This again made this novel refreshing since a lot of other books in this genre are generally a little fanciful. The ending was a little rushed however. I wish it was a little bit longer so we could see the conclusion fully fleshed out.
Characters: The characters in this is what made this so realistic. Their feelings felt very valid to me and they were not cut and dry people. Gavin and Thea both had nuances to their development which I didn't always agree with. They definitely had their faults but that is what made them so real. Overall, I felt that these two did a lot of growing in the course of the novel but they could have grown even more if the ending was made a little longer, making this perfect.
I did really enjoy reading this, but there was something off about it, something that kept it from being a higher rated read. I'm not sure what it is. I did like it, and it was a quick read, but was still not 5 stars. That being said, I do already have the next installment and am just about to start reading it.
3.5/5 stars.
