Six of Crows

I think everyone is reading this series right now, as well as Shadow & Bone, in anticipation of the new Netflix series coming next month. I had to jump on the bandwagon, seeing as though I have never read anything from the Grishaverse. And I have to say I am so happy I did.

Synopsis: Magical heist of six ragtag teens. Enough said.

Plot: Whenever I'm starting a new fantasy series, especially one so fleshed out as the Grishaverse, I am always super intimidated. It can be really hard to dive into and learn a whole bunch of new characters and world. However, I had only heard good things about this series, and rest assured, it's fantastic. This book is the definition of a page turner, every second of the plot was intriguing and left me wanting to read more and more. The plot is also so tight! There is nothing fluffy about it and everything is so clearly well thought out. Sometimes you can tell when reading a work that the author went into so much planning and detail before writing, and you definitely get that here. There is comedy, uncringy romance, friendship, politics and the overcoming of personal battles and goals. I cannot believe it took me so long to pick this up.

Characters: Building and fleshing out a single character can be hard for an author to do correctly, but Leigh Bardugo did it six times. The chapters are split POV from each of the six characters. Through those chapters we learn about their backstory, their family or lack of and their personal reasons for agreeing to this impossible heist. I fell in love with these characters so quickly and was rooting for them wholeheartedly. My favorite part about these characters is that they are not black and white, good or evil. They have all done "bad" things, but they are not "bad" characters without heart, soul or reason and through reading you realize just how "good" they all are.

Honestly wow, what an incredible story with amazing writing. I will be picking up the second immediately and cannot wait to dive further into this new world. May have found a new favorite author as well. No mourners no funerals!

5/5 stars.
