Finally picked up another new romance and thankfully, this one fared better than the last.
Synopsis: Up for the same promotion at a cruise line company, two coworkers that don't seem to get along too well are sent on a week long voyage to the Galápagos Islands. They are both sent with the job to create the best proposal to boost bookings for their company to get the promotion.
Plot: This is definitely a good starter romance for people who are just getting into the genre. Not too steamy, with fade to black romance but still some interesting tropes of enemies to lovers, forced proximity and some good banter. Despite being a romance book, the rest of the plot was actually the best part to me. The book wasn't all romance centered which was super refreshing but may not be what everyone else is looking for. The inclusion of the work oriented plot was what really pushed this book up the rating scale for me though. Henley suffers from sexism in the work place and being a workaholic at a place that doesn't really appreciate her. There are also conversations about first impressions, toxic relationships, sisterly love and being eco-friendly. Was a really quirky and cute read, but could also tend to be a little cringy at times when it was trying too hard to be relevant.
Characters: Henley was a super fun narrator. She was witty, neurotic and a little crazy at times but it made for a really funny and quick read. She was relatable and her drive and passion for her job was a little inspiring. Our hero, Graeme, was also really done really well. He was caring about Henleys position at work as well as being a fair and patient guy, pushing our heroine to be better and grow, which is something I look for in my romances. That being said, at times I didn't fully believe their connection. It seemed to jump from hatred and really funny banter to love really quickly for me and although I can understand where it came from it did feel rushed at moments. However, their romance was very cute and again, I love how they pushed each other to grow.
Much more than a romance story. I loved the inclusion about caring for the environment and doing what you really love at work while making an impact on the world. However, if you are looking for something strictly romance centered, this might not be for you.
3.75/5 stars.
