I had completely forgotten about this series until it was shoved in my face via TikTok. So, I finally read it and I'm not entirely sure I get the hype...at least with the first book.
Synopsis: The last time Juliette touched someone was almost a year ago. Because after that, she was taken into confinement for murder by the Reestablishment. She doesn't mind being locked away though, as long as she doesn't hurt anyone else with her lethal touch. But with the world outside crumbling away, the Reestablishment decides maybe Juliette can do more for them than they thought.
Plot: Dystopian! Dystopian! Dystopian! I never grew out of that phase so this already gets so many extra points simply because of that. The story was told in an interesting journal format with a lot of things crossed out on every page. I did like it a lot at first, but it became distracting and hard to read at times. Because of this format too, a lot of the storyline was told in a very straightforward way and without any description. That being said, when writing wasn't plain, there were a lot of beautiful metaphors and reading from Juliette's perspective was heartbreaking at times. The whole plot was a little on the convenient side throughout and the romance a little cringy and insta-lovey (and I do hate a love triangle). The ending was also quite anti-climatic with no real resolution or cliffhanger to lead to the next book which seemed odd to me. I think the pacing is the biggest issue with that, there wasn't much of a narrative arc.
Characters: Very few characters involved, which is totally fine. I love an unreliable narrator and it was definitely hard to trust anyone in this book as you slowly start to figure out what happened, which was fun. Adam is a dream and everyone loves a bad boy with Warner, so no complaints there. Love triangles still aren't my thing though, but enemies to lovers???
At this point, I have read all the way through to book 4 now so I did like it enough to continue. There is also a lot more development as the series goes on and major characters changes.
Isn't anything extraordinary though.
3.5/5 stars.
