Realm Breaker

Was really looking forward to another one of Aveyard's books after loving the Red Queen. This was quite different....but still enjoyable.

Synopsis: Corayne An-Amarat lives with her pirate mother in a small corner of Allward craving adventure. When an assassin and an immortal come knocking on her door telling her she is the last in an ancient lineage and the only one able to save the realm she is soon thrust into an adventure to do just that. Joining the three of them is a squire, a forger, a bounty hunter and an old sorceress and together they stand against half the realm, an evil wizard, a man impossible to kill and an army, unlike anything the realm has witnessed.

Plot: The plot instantly intrigued me because I am forever chasing the high from Six of Crows. This gave me the same vibes from the synopsis seeing a ragtag group and multiple POVs, I was hopeful. This however was not that. This storyline is VERY high-fantasy and VERY adventure-based. At the beginning, you are dropped into the storyline and have to determine the history as the story is told, not much info-dumping here. I may just be dumb, but this story, although great, was really hard to understand at times and the geography went right over my head. Besides the millions of characters with difficult names and the insane map, the story is woven very thoughtfully and had many fun surprising twists and turns. Beyond that, it is also just incredibly well written and I can definitely see growth from the Red Queen series.

Characters: The characters are alright. There are funny moments throughout the story that make me like the characters more, but as a whole, apart from Corayne, they feel very much like a mystery. Maybe we will learn more about them in the following novels, but I feel as though we don't know anything about them. It is also possible that there were just too many of them. There are at least 6 different POVs and other characters introduced constantly which was very overwhelming and hard to keep track of. I'm hoping for more solidity in the characters going forward because oof it's a lot.

Overall, this was a great new series for Aveyard and although complicated, I cannot wait to read the next one.

4/5 stars.

Also, I just wanted to apologize for my lack of posts these last few weeks. The end of this semester has been insane, and I was focusing a lot on school without much time to read. BUT the end is upon us and I will hopefully be able to be reading and posting more.
