People We Meet on Vacation

I haven't read beach read yet so I cannot comment on that polarizing book, BUT this one however...not bad Emily Henry not bad.

Synopsis: After meeting in college, Poppy and Alex, two wildly different best friends start a yearly tradition of taking a summer vacation together. 8 vacations later and something happens that ruins everything, leading the two to not speak for years. We jump between past timelines of their previous vacations, to the current summer where they agree, after two years, to go on one more hoping to heal their relationship.

Plot: I have to admit, I was feeling a little tired of romance stories. It is becoming harder and harder to find something that doesn't feel overdone while still being cutesy and not cringy. So I was not expecting to like this as much as I did. Finally a book that does the friends to lovers trope correctly! Poppy and Alex were absolutely a puzzle piece couple. This was also a super easy read. A lot of romances can come with characters that are struggling with grief or a crisis of some kind. Which can be great, but if you're looking for something really lighthearted this one focused more on rekindling a friendship that could be more with a sprinkle of discovering what you want from life. Pacing was really nice and story was told in a way, leading up to the ill-fated trip, that left you guessing at what could happened.

Characters: Poppy is hilarious. Her commentary was perfect in all of the horrible situations they kept finding themselves in. Seeing just how opposite her and Alex were, but also how perfect they are together was really sweet and made me root for them more than most romance book couples. Alex was also the SWEETEST hero I might have ever read. I want him.

Turns out I might like friends to lovers more than enemies to lovers? TBD.

A perfect summer read. I completely understand the hype.

4/5 stars.
