Like many books, I kinda went into this blind, only knowing that a lot of people loved it, and boy do I agree with them because this was phenomenal.
Summary: This story takes place in a universe where dangerous mist covers the forests and magical tarot cards bestow powers on those that hold them. Our story follows Elspeth who was infected by the mist, gifting her with a special magic but also marking her as illegal. She runs into a highwayman, a sort of criminal set on stealing cards from people. However, this highwayman turns out to be the kings nephew in an attempt to collect all the cards, committing treason, and bring them all together to stop the mist and the sickness that it brings. But Elspeth and her secret are growing more and more dangerous as the Nightmare behind her eyes is lowing taking her over.
Plot: This was so unique and special. I have never read a book like it before and it took popular aspects like magic and tarot cards and turned it into something really clever. The atmosphere created really nailed down the gothic horror vibes from the very first page and I found this incredibly hard to put down. Not only was I intrigued at every turn but was also not expecting a romance from this and was PLEASANTLY surprised as it became one of my favorite aspects. This was adventurous and mysterious and thrilling all at the same time. I am in love with the way Gillig weaves her stories and completely envelopes the readers.
Characters: I would lay down my life for Ravyn. He was perfection with just the right amount of mysterious and lust. Like I said, I was not expecting a romance but he really grabbed my heart. Our main girl Elspeth was also fantastic and did not suffer from FMC syndrome! She was strong and hardheaded but fought for what she believed in and what she wanted. The tension between these two was great and even though it wasn't that long of a story, their relationship progression seemed authentic and realistic with a relatively slow burn. Besides these two we have a pretty extensive cast of secondary characters but each and every one had their moment and all felt intension and purposeful in their place.
Most likely going to be one in my favorite reads of the year and I've already started the second one.
Starting 2024 off strong.
5/5 stars.
