Read this with a friend which made uncovering the secrets even more fun.
Synopsis: In 2003, Luke Ryder, stepfather of the now acclaimed director Guy Howard (then aged 10), was found dead. Guy Howards mother and his two half-sisters were all in the house at the time of murder, but claimed to have seen nothing. The case went cold and no one was ever charged. That is until now, when the case is being dug back up in an attempt to uncover new information and find closure with a team of experts in a six-episode documentary, put on by Guy. Will they solve this decade old case? Will Guy be happy with what is uncovered? Will the family ever recover or turn against each other with new information being found?
Plot: I've read a couple of murder mysteries of course, but nothing told in this style. This was filled with news articles, maps, photos, transcripts, and lots of different mixed-media aspects that made this super fun and very easy to flip through. I was SUPER entertained the entire time and was kept guessing along with the rest of the characters. Told in six parts, in a script-like format to reflect the TV show, this was nearly impossible to put down. I stayed up way too late to finish it and was filled with all the creepy vibes I wanted from this. My only issue was that in the end, the way the conclusion played out meant that a huge aspect of the story and plot point of the murder investigation was completely void and irrelevant, which was a little disappointing, since it was so intersting. But regardless, I had the best time reading and was throughly entertained, which is exactly what I wanted from this.
Characters: What an interesting group of people. I am really happy with the group of characters chosen and with the way that Hunter decided to tell this story. We are introduced to the six experts at the very beginning and we not only get closer to the family members of this case, but the experts as well as they attempt to uncover new information. Each expert has a lot of secrets and we uncover a lot about them as well as the case. You cannot trust anyone and no one is as innocent as they seem.
If Hunter does another thriller in this style, I will definitely be picking it up.
4/5 stars.
