Another backlist is finally being read! Thanks to Tiktok for bringing this to my attention. This is definitely an older one but it completely deserves the attention it's getting now.
Synopsis: Ah the years of dystopian trilogies. This one follows the future United States now known as the Republic at war with its neighboring colonies. Government prodigy June is born into one of the wealthier districts and is being groomed to be a military success, following her deceased parent's footsteps. Day, on the opposite spectrum was born into the slums and is the country's most wanted criminal. When Day commits a crime grabbing medication to cure the plague that has affected his family he also becomes a prime suspect in the murder of a government guard, who also happens to be June's brother. June, seeking to avenge her brother's death attempts to track Day. In doing so, she not only find him but other secrets about the corrupt government she's working for and the mysterious deaths of her parents.
Plot: All the good dystopian vibes from this one. We love a corrupt government. We love a budding enemies to lovers relationship. We love uncovering secrets. Super fast passed novel with a lot of action and some twists too. This especially brings back nostalgic memories which made it worth reading on its own. As this is a series, my only complaint is that this book very much felt like a book 1. There was a lot of setup and not much resolved in this one but that only makes me want to continue on reading more, which is sort of the point. Regardless, still interesting and who doesn't love a "tracking you to kill you but now I kind of love you" plot?
Characters: The characters could have been less than great and I still would have loved this because dystopians are superior. BUT, they were fab. Since it is told in dual perspective we are able to get inside both characters' minds which makes it very easy to sympathize and root for them both separately and together. The side characters were some of my favorites too and I can't wait to see how they are used in book 2. I particularly loved the focus on the intelligence behind these characters and their many badass moments too. Day and June are great on their own but I can't wait to see how they continue to work together and how their relationship changes over the next few books.
Already have the next on hold from the library. Thanks Libby.
4/5 stars.
