In a Holidaze

My first Christina Lauren! Just okay though… and if this didn’t have a holiday theme, I probably wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much.

Synopsis: Maelyn Jones and her whole family have spent every Christmas at a cabin in Utah for decades. This Christmas however is a little different. Maelyn is not having as good of a time as she normally does; she’s moved back in with her parents, hates her job and just made a huge romantic mistake with the wrong person. To top it all off, the cabin is being sold. However, at the end of the trip, on the drive to the airport, Maelyn somehow gets transported back to the beginning of the holiday, 5 days before. In a Groundhog Day situation, Maelyn gets a chance to do over the holiday in order to set everything right, the cabin, her life and her dream relationship.

Plot: A cute plot. Been done before but I still was enjoying it for the most part and there was just the right about of do-overs before it became annoying. The setting really did do it for me. There were a lot of cozy traditions and great wintery scenes. Nothing about the romance though blew me away. It was fine, as was the rest of the book. There was a little too much simplicity in the writing, and a lot more telling than showing. I've heard so many good things about Lauren that maybe I just set my expectations too high. It wasn't disappointing or bad, but I probably will not be re-reading.

Characters: In a romance novel, I personally feel as though the characters should usually be the best part of the book. This was not the case here. I felt as though I barely knew anything about the two of them and that led me to not care about their relationship as much. I rooted for them in the end, but I couldn't tell you one thing about their likes or dislikes beside each other and Christmas.

A middle-of-the-road romance, but timely nevertheless.

3/5 stars.
