How to Fail at Flirting

Another day another romance novel. At the time of reading, I really did enjoy this one. But as time has gone by, it wasn't as memorable as I thought.

Synopsis: Professor Naya Turner is having a tough time. She hasn't dated since a previous abusive ex and is very timid and worried about getting out there. Instead, Naya puts all of her energy into her job. However, after her department is in danger of being cut, her friends decide to make her a checklist to get back into dating. In an attempt to cross things off, Naya goes to a bar and meets Jake. Jake is sensitive and confident but just so happens to be in a position that could destroy Naya's vulnerable career, which is all she feels she has left.

Plot: Although this is definitely a romance and has a decent amount of cute/fluffy/lovey and smutty moments, this story also covers a lot of serious topics and the last 100 pages were really intense at times. Naya is dealing with an abusive ex-boyfriend and there were several moments I found hard to read due to on-page abuse. This is definitely an important story to share, just something to note before thinking you're going into something light when you're not. There is also a slight workplace theme woven throughout as Jake becomes involved at her place of work as well as her ex and we see how Naya gains confidence at work and in her personal relationships. I think multiple POVs would have elevated this a little bit more because we only get to see things from Naya's perspective and I'm a sucker for multiple.

Characters: These characters were really easy to care and root for. The communication was incredible and there was an easy connection and spark between the two from the start. I ESPECIALLY appreciated how kind and patient Jake was with Naya and her trauma. Jake never faulted or pushed throughout the entirety of the story and I really appreciated seeing that side of a hero. Naya was also likable and you really feel for her as she struggles with overcoming her past. Although she goes through significant growth over the novel which was emotional and intense, she really only stands up for herself once and I wish there was more of that.

A strong debut novel but pretty middle of the road for me overall.

3/5 stars.

TW: Attempted rape, abusive relationship, gaslighting, revenge porn, PTSD.
