Read this one with my bestie, which automatically gives it extra points, but I did enjoy this!
Synopsis: Witch and witchunter falling in love...while hunting each other. Rune is the Crimson Moth, a witch savior doing her best to help every witch that is hunted and captured by the Scarlet Guard. Gideon is the captain of the Scarlet Guard, and with a history involving witches, hates them to their very core. The Crimson Moth is his prize hunt, but she keeps evading him. In search of more information and a husband, Rune sets her eyes on Gideon. In search of the Crimson Moth, and with a lead, Gideon sets his eyes on Rune. But does playing each other and hunting each other come to an end when feelings develop?
Plot: While the general plot was something that I have read before, I still did enjoy this overall. The world was a little underdeveloped, but the magic system was really fascinating. It took blood witches to the next level, and combined an intersting history with queens that was something new to the mix. I did guess the plot twist pretty early on, but for me that never ruins anything and only adds to my enjoyment. I liked reading the double POV, and there were a lot of different layers to the plot that kept this interesting. The writing itself was good, nothing that really stood out in a good or bad way, it just did what it needed to do. I think that overall, this was a very good YA book. I don't think it would survive in the Adult category, but being Young Adult, I think it was perfect. It was a super quick read, it was entertaining, and it was exactly what I wanted when I picked it up. I think this book set up book two perfectly, and that one is going to be filled with a lot more action that I am excited for.
Characters: My biggest issue with this was the romance. I really enjoyed the characters on their own, but the feelings that developed between the two main characters felt very surface level to me. They go from hating each other for years to falling in love almost instantly with no real connection developed. There wasn't a single moment that I felt their relationship was believable. The pacing of the overall story was great, however pacing when it came to the romance, was way too quick and could have been developed more slowly over the second book. The secondary characters in this were really wonderful however and worked well with Rune, adding what they needed to the story.
What an ending though!! So much happened in the last 30 pages it was crazy. Really curious to see where things are going to end up. Will definitely be picking up book two.
3.5/5 stars.
