I know I am once again late to the game, but this was everything I wanted and more....up until the last few pages. However, I choose to ignore those and just focus on the rest of this fantastic thriller! I completely understand why this is so coveted.
Synopsis: Amy Dunne, wife to Nick Dunne, disappears the morning of their 5th wedding anniversary. The media is quick to play the "husband murderer" card and soon Nick is wrapped up in this whirlwind of a case where everything points to him. His clever, beautiful wife is missed by everyone in the town creating a large target on Nicks's back. He turns to lies, deceit and very suspicious behavior...but did he do it? If he didn't...where is Amy?
Plot: I could not put this down! I buddy-read this with a friend and it was so hard to stop after each section to discuss, I just wanted to keep reading. So many twists and turns throughout the entire novel. It was unsettling, disturbing, suspenseful, crazy and I loved (almost) every page of it. I was guessing and predicting up until the very end so it made this feel interactive in a way. The little details are amazing and would definitely make this a fun second read too. Everything was so carefully crafted and props to Flynn for being so meticulous in making sure this played out correctly. It felt like everything was carefully thought out from page 1. There was also a lot of subtle commentary on marriage, making an effort and how social media plays a role in everyone's lives which really makes the reader think as the plot progresses. Such a gripping thriller.
Characters: Wow they are both awful but wow they are also both fun to read. Amy really did that and Nick really let that happen. They were so nuanced with many little facets that made me question them from beginning to end. I love an unreliable narrator and I'm still not sure what was truth vs. falsity in the novel and if I understood these characters at all. But that was completely the point, you never knew what these characters were going to do next.
The ending is the only thing that was really disappointing. I just expected much more after such a great beginning and middle. It felt a little like a cheap cop-out. Everything else was fantastic but for that reason it's:
4/5 stars.
