Daughter of the Pirate King

I was so excited to read this one and had such high expectations for a super fun pirate read but unfortunately, this fell so short. I am sorry to anyone that loves this but yikes.

Synopsis: Follows Alosa who is (shocker) the daughter of a pirate king. She gets intentionally captured from her own ship to be held hostage on an enemy ship in order to find the treasure her father sent her to retrieve. Although, this mission isn't as easy as she first thought when she comes into contact with first-mate Riden.

Plot: Although the plot was interesting enough, the execution was not well done leaving the whole book very boring. Not a lot happens in a book that is over 300 pages. There was also zero world-building and everything felt very told instead of shown. Alosa spends most of the book just telling us that she spent the night looking around the ship and that's it. There were quite a few plot holes as well and the biggest twist (which was actually pretty interesting) was ruined by the characters themselves making it much less impactful and exciting.

Characters: Like I just mentioned, I didn't like Alosa all that much. She started off strong and definitely had her girl-boss, bad-ass pirate moments but for most of it, she just got on my nerves. The entire book was filled with her bragging about how she is this intelligent, top-tier pirate but yet she continually makes the stupidest mistakes. Riden was okay but the relationship between the two seemed very forced and came out of absolutely nowhere. There was no development and they jumped from hating each other to risking their lives to save each other very quickly making it feel very unnatural.

I honestly don't understand how this has an average of a 4-star rating. Am I missing something? I'm interested enough to want to know how it ends, but I'm not sure I want to sit through another novel filled with complaining and weird relationships.

2.5/5 stars.
