Picked this one up immediately after reading Evelyn Hugo so maybe that's why I wasn't as obsessed as I thought I would be. However, still amazing and still would recommend to anyone who will listen to me rave.
Synopsis: Picture a Stevie Nicks (Daisy) or Fleetwood Mac (The Six) type situation. Now picture them being interviewed and sharing the story of their band coming together, their many albums, their successes and failures, their addictions and ultimately, their breakup. This novel shows fame from an inside perspective. The good, the bad and the really ugly.
Plot: TJR knows how to do a plot twist! I was not expecting that ending or a twist at all but absolutely loved it. This was such a fun read. I, like many others wonder at the lives of musicians and what fame is really like and I believe this is a very accurate representation of what it could have been like for a rock band in the 70s. Not only an entertaining read, but thought provoking as you read about different types of love and relationships, drug addictions and family. A very layered read for sure while still being super funny and engrossing.
Characters: The characters are definitely what makes this book so interesting because of the variety of the members of this band. The way this story is told in an interview format leaves for unreliable narrators, making you have to decide the truth sometimes. Each character is sharing their perspective of the story so everything varies a little, as stories usually do. Daisy is a very compelling character, not my favorite person for sure, but there was something about about her that just drew you in, which was entirely the point. Billy and the rest of the band were more of the same, great characters but not my favorite people. That for me, is what makes this story so raw and real. Characters with flaws, making mistakes and learning (or not) from them.
Taylor Jenkins Reid, I'm obsessed. Cannot wait to pick up another of her books.
4/5 stars.
