Warning: I did not enjoy this like everyone else on this planet and am about to roast it.
Sally Rooney stans do not come for me, I TRIED. After hating Normal People I thought I would give her one more shot, but I think Rooney just isn't for me.
Synopsis: Two college-aged ex-lovers Frances and Bobbi meet and get involved with a married couple.
Plot: I honestly couldn't come up with a better/longer plotline for this because frankly there wasn't one. The whole narrative felt so linear and plain and super mundane, to the point where it doesn't even feel like a story. A common complaint with Rooney's books is her writing style and I have to agree. She is so literal in her descriptions and all her sentences are told in a staccato boring rhythm. I had to force myself to pick this up and continuously wanted to DNF (but I soldiered through). Sometimes there was a rare moment of great descriptive writing, but because of the lack of plot, the descriptions were about absolutely nothing. The random social commentary also felt a little out of place in the story.
Characters: I think a lot of people like Rooney's books for her characters because they are relatable and real but I cannot stand any one of them. I don't always have to like a character or relate to them but I do need to find them interesting enough to care, and I didn't, about a single one. They were all flat, self-indulgent and made me uncomfortable to read about. I cannot understand how they were falling for each other because they were all awful people who I didn't want to read about.
Okay, rant over.
I really wanted to like it...I just don't. Not my kinda book.
ONTO THE NEXT.
1/5 stars.
