Yes, I am just now reading this. I'm only five years late.
Synopsis: Ever since she was a little girl, Scarlett Dragna dreamed of attending Caraval—a show filled with mystery, magic and danger. Everyone covets a ticket and a chance to play the game to win the prize of a lifetime...one wish. Trapped on her small island home with her sister Tella, Scarlett finally receives an invitation just days before her arranged marriage. Scarlett and Tella manage to escape the island and their authoritarian father with help from a mysterious sailor to finally attend Caraval. But upon arrival, Scarlett quickly realizes this show isn't all fun and games. Her sister is captured by Legend, the gamemaker, and is revealed to be the objective of the game, find Tella to win Caraval.
Plot: From the jump this was so interesting and creative. I loved the premise and every chapter kept me so invested and curious to see what would happen next. Absolutely unpredictable and very twisty. There were times that I was a little confused and the ending wasn't as great as it could be, leading to the next book, but overall so fun to read about and a world I would love to revisit. The writing style is what this is most famous for, and I can completely see why. The colors, the descriptions, the use of all the senses are amazing and make you feel like you are right inside the story playing along.
Characters: You never know with any of these characters and I always find that so much more fun. All unreliable, you find yourself questioning everyone along the way and never knowing who's going to do what next. The relationship between the sisters is a major highlight but I did find myself liking Scarlett a lot more than Tella.
Mysterious and captivating. I have since finished the series and enjoyed them all. This is how you do YA.
4/5 stars.
