This is another interesting one for me. I feel as though I keep disagreeing with the masses...but this was not my favorite romance unfortunately. Which is disappointing because I really thought I was going to love this.
Summary: Luc, the son of two rockstars public image is potentially going to affect his job. To save his image and his position he fakes a relationship with his seemingly perfect enemy, Oliver. An enemies to lovers story, with a touch of a cancer story? Sort of?
Plot: I love an enemies to lovers plot line as much as the next gal, and this was fine. The plot wasn't egregious and was not the main fault of this book for me. The only thing I didn't understand was the inclusion of a parent-cancer plot. A big issue throughout the book for Luc was his trauma from having an absent father and how that has affected his life. So, I liked the turmoil that came with his father wanting to get to know him, but for that to end up being a "just kidding!!!" moment, it seemed really pointless for me. It felt like a last minute addition to the story and didn't come across as being done well. The ending was also very lack luster, rushed and underwhelming. I wished Hall left more time for a better ending, or at least more time for the boys to actually be together officially.
Characters: Now this is where all my issues are. I guess I'm very character driven, because the characters absolutely ruined this otherwise okay book. Luc sucked, for basically the whole book. I understand his character was supposed to be struggling and sarcastic but it came off abrasive and self-centered to me. There is banter, and then there is just being rude. Because of his attitude toward his one-dimensional friends (unforgettable background characters) and life, it was really hard to feel bad and root for him. This led to me never wanting the fake relationship to become real. I feel as though what Luc really needed was to be alone and figure out his issues before he tried to be in another relationship...and that doesn't make a good romance story. Oliver however, was such a sweet character. That is, until about 90% through when him and Luc completely switched positions and thoughts on everything. It seemed like everything Oliver used to believe in just became the opposite, which was very confusing and again made the ending rushed. Overall, I didn't believe in their connection and it seemed a little toxic in the way they overly relied on each other and spoke to each other, mostly Luc.
Adding a joke about sexual assault and throwing a bit of eating disorder in, left me feeling unsure. I might try another book by Hall, but this one didn't do it for me. Maybe it's because nothing will every compare to Get a Life Chloe Brown but we'll see.
2.5/5 stars.
