Assistant to the Villain

Those red-sprayed edges bamboozled me.

Synopsis: After getting fired from her previous job and literally crashing into the notorious and thought-to-be dangerous Villian of her town, Evie has no choice but to accept his offer of employment. However, she didn't expect to start to fall for him or start investigating as deeply as she did when his life begins to be threatened by an unknown source.

Plot: I was so beyond excited for this after reading the synopsis and seeing the cover...but this unfortunately just didn't hit as hard as I was anticipating. I was hoping for campy and fun but instead, it was painfully unfunny with humor akin to a 14-year-old boy. The writing was also very basic in style and to me was very evident it came from a TikTok series. The plot felt disjointed and boring as well as a reader-serve with trope after trope of things I feel the author thought her audience would want. The romance itself wasn't terrible but the surrounding elements just really hindered my enjoyment. The reveals were not super shocking either, but overall the vibes were enough to keep me going.

Characters: The Villain was the best part of this story, and he really redeemed it for me. Although his motives–which aren't revealed until the very end– are subpar, he himself was very butterfly-inducing and a great character. Our main gal Evie, not so much. I really wanted to like her, but I'm very over the clumsy, awkward MC trope. The side characters were also just okay, they aren't people I have strong feelings for in either direction but I feel that with time, I could absolutely see myself really liking some of them.

Also wasn't aware this was set up to be a trilogy....will begrudgingly be continuing in hopes of a better sequel.

2.5/5 stars.
