Alright, alright I read it. Can I stop seeing it everywhere now?
Synopsis: Five years previous, Andie Bell was murdered. Her boyfriend, Sal Singh, was charged. However, he killed himself out of guilt before he could be acquitted – or so the story goes. Pippa Fitz-Amobi isn't convinced. For her senior project, Pippa is opening the case on her own; determined to find the REAL killer and put the Singh family at peace, despite signs that someone clearly wants the truth to stay buried with Andie and Sal.
Plot: Interesting enough and kept me guessing throughout. I've really been getting into thrillers a lot more recently, and it's a good time of year to crack this one open. I always say how much I love a good whodunnit and this one was filled with creepy vibes and creative twists. Jackson also touched on some relevant journalism topics and industry faults including racism in the media. The story is fast passed, unpredictable, and entertaining from the jump; and despite the size, it's a quick and easy read. The biggest downside to me is that I am definitely not the target audience, so it felt a little "too-YA" for me at times with some plot and character elements but regardless was still quite enjoyable and I understand the hype. Incredible for a debut novel.
Characters: This is one of the best depictions of teens I've read in a while. They were believable and spoke in a way that this generation of teens would. That being said, not too sure a 17-year-old would have come to this conclusion while the trained cops couldn't...so maybe a little unrealistic...but why not right? Also a little bit questionable for some of the things Pippa does – including committing several crimes herself to prove someone she barely knows is innocent, but I still appreciated her grit and bravery (or stupidity?). Side characters were well written, and it was fun just how many characters were introduced and in creative and unexpected ways.
Really enjoyed this one, finished in one sitting, and will be picking up the next few.
4/5 stars.
TW: animal abuse, mention of rape, mention of suicide, kidnapping, death, and drugs.
